Murphy Setshwane is the Director responsible for Business Development at the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority.

He is an Economist by profession with over 20 years’ experience in policy development and communications regulation. As the Director responsible for Business Development, he is responsible for, among others, development of strategies directed at market growth, competition and tariff regulation within the communications sector. He has been involved in the liberalisation of Botswana communications sector since the early 2000s.

t was love at first sight when I learnt of tech and cyber law as an area of law and I am inclined to grow old in that space.

I am motivated and work tirelessly to achieve proficiency in its diverse sub-areas especially technology policy and regulation, the corporate commercial aspects of innovation and technology, ethics and legalities of new and emerging tech (such as AI, robotics, cloud and edge computing, fintech and blockchain), privacy and data protection, cybersecurity law, digital rights, telecoms law, electronic evidence law and ICTs for people living with disabilities.

The list is time dependent because it is in the nature of technology to rapidly evolve and disrupt, bringing forth challenges that ought to be resolved through law, policy and/or regulation.

I also hold a CompTIA Security+, an ICA Certificate in AML and went through a Cybersecurity Leadership Program at Duke University.

Senior Lecturer in Computer Science and Coordinator of the eHealth Research Unit within the University of Botswana.

University representative at the Digital Health Technical Working Group under the Ministry of Health. Has academic and professional background in health informatics, with specific training and expertise in Socio-Informatics (Hons), Computer Science (MSc), Project Management (PRINCE2) and recently completed PhD in Telemedicine. Over 9 years experience working in health informatics research and capacity building initiatives in Botswana. Prior engagements focused on telemedicine and health informatics initiatives within resource-constraint environments.

Previously served as a Project Manager in 2014 for the implementation and scale-up of a Mobile Telemedicine solution (also known as Kgonafalo) under the Botswana Ministry of Health, a research lead in 2015 on a telemedicine project funded by Microsoft Corporation, utilizing Television (TV) White Space technology to augment traditional broadband internet connectivity within healthcare facilities in Botswana, a research coordinator for a national school eye screening program (PEEK Vision) which was piloted on over 12,000 school going kids in Botswana. Contributed to the review and implementation of the recently launched Botswana National eHealth Strategy (2020-2024).

Current Principal Investigator (PI) and implementation lead for VisualDx (a mobile clinical decision support system) in Botswana. VisualDx is a diagnostic clinical decision support system utilising an AI feature (DermExpert) and is designed to enhance diagnostic accuracy, aid therapeutic decisions, and improve patient care. Also PI in a recently acquired research grant for a project titled “Interoperable Health Data – the missing link for better decision making; Knowledge and Attitudes towards sharing of Genomic Data”.

Anthony Nkani currently works for BTC as a Product Manager-Government & Corporates under Marketing division. Mr Nkani is a dynamic Product Development Manager with twenty (20) years in the telecommunication industry split between Thirteen (13) years in Marketing under Product Development and Seven (7) years in Technology Operations under PABX (Switch Board) Installation and Maintenance.

He is proficient in collaborating with multiple stakeholders in the development and management of products and services, with skills in market analysis, product development, costing & pricing, development of a profit & loss, product/service performance monitoring, change management, risk management and project management.

Mr Nkani’s achievements includes leading the development of BTC Internet of Things (IoT) Strategy & carrying out proof of concepts on multiple products such as cattle tracking, smart water metering & smart energy management using LoRa & SigFox technologies. He led the revision of over two thousand Voice Usage tariffs for BTC Fixed & BTC Mobile covering National & International traffic as well as leading the migration of BTC Fixed Voice business customers from competition through a discounted tariff restoring traffic that was lost, hence generating new revenue. Mr Nkani also participated in delivering successful BTC Projects amongst others BTC@40, 14% VAT implementation across all BTC Products, Redknee to Converse 1 Billing products migration resulting in an optimized product catalogue.

He holds a BSc Honours in Business Computing & Information Systems from the University of Central Lancashire, a Diploma in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from the University of Botswana, and an International Advanced Diploma in Computer Studies from NCC Education.

Prof. Cheddi Kiravu is Associate Professor of Sustainable Energy Systems and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the New Era College of Arts, Science and Technology.

He holds a doctorate in Engineering from the University of Botswana, where he taught Electrical Power Engineering and Electrical Machine courses. He was the founding Director of the Clean Energy Research Centre at UB; a position he held for 10 years up to 2015.

Prof. Kiravu was also the eLearning coordinator at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at UB. He was among the few staff who made a commitment to eLearning early during its inception at the UB in 2004. His research pioneered the eLearning for engineering courses at the UB.

Kaone Mpodi currently serves BTC as a Network Infrastructure Build Project Manager. He has a vast wealth of experience spanning 24 years in the Telecommunications sector. Under his current job portfolio, he is involved in various cutting-edge Technology and Commercial Strategic projects that he is passionate about.
Some highlights of his Programme Management achievements include leading a team of well-seasoned and experienced BTC Engineers and Consultants from Korea Telecom to deliver a strategy that modernised the Fixed and Mobile Broadband Infrastructure and Commercial Strategies. The Broadband Strategy delivered a modernised mobile core network, new product offerings for mobile & fixed and the fastest & widest 4G deployment in 2019 which was over 190 4G sites in that year. A total of 114 FTTC sites and 2 FTTH sites in Phakalane Golf Estate and Gaborone North were also delivered as part of the fixed broadband rollout.

Mr Mpodi holds a Higher National Diploma in electrical & Electronics Engineering from the University of Botswana and a Certified Prince 2 Project Manager. He enjoys working in the exciting, fast-paced, and ever-changing Technology space as it provides continuous learning and growth.
